Our Class Article... Police name accused Facebook predator
IDENTIFIED: Natalia Burgess, of Auckland, allegedly faked Facebook identities to build relationships with teenage Christchurch boys.
A woman accused of being a Facebook predator could be interviewed by police next week. Natalia Burgess, 28, of Auckland, has been revealed as the woman who allegedly made up fake Facebook identities to build relationships with teenage Christchurch boys. It is claimed the woman posed as various teenage girls on Facebook to make Christchurch teenagers believe they were in a relationship with her. Senior Sergeant John Robinson, of the Christchurch police, said legal advisers would this week consider evidence collected in interviews to establish if fraud or grooming charges could be laid. Auckland police could interview Burgess next week and charges could be laid after that, he said. "I will be pushing as hard as I can to get the legal team to look at the evidence this week and see what charges, if any, are there. At best, I would say it is likely that she will be charged," Robinson said. "We need to ask her for an explanation in relation to these allegations. We think we have enough information to do this [lay charges]. "We will ask her what her intentions were when she was making contact with people." Burgess, who lives in Mangere but grew up in Westport, did not answer phone calls this week. She posted on the Facebook page of an old friend, who does not want to be identified. The comment, written in text-speak, said that people saying they knew her as a child in Westport were lying. "i am nt goin to hide away after a guy lie bt me. every1 nw sayin thy knw me or grow up with me or live in westport with me. i am jt sayin my side of the story. i dnt knw any1 frm westport and whoeva calim to b our friends nd to cut it ot." She wrote that she thought people in Westport were trying to cash in on her new fame: "yea just make me laugh i never grew up in westport and i am sure as hell dnt had mates down there or even friend that a lie. i thnk it funny u al hate me whn i live there and nw people wnt fame so thy r friends of mine thy knw my famliy and what i bn doin 4 the last 15 year. i was wat 12 whn we left westport." The friend, who went to Sunday school with Burgess in Westport, said she was surprised when she heard what Burgess was accused of. "I was a little bit surprised because she came from a really nice family," she said. Kirsten Bromley, who attended Westport North School with Burgess until they were about 12, said Burgess' father was a Salvation Army captain. "They are the most wonderful people you could meet," she said. "It just guts me they have to put up with it and go through this and have their names dragged through the mud because of it." Burgess' Sunday school friend and Bromley remember her as a child who had a habit of stretching the truth. "She had a tendency for ... attention seeking. There's no reason behind it," Bromley said. "She never wanted for anything. Her parents always gave her attention and all that stuff." Bromley said she deleted Burgess as a Facebook friend about a year ago because some things Burgess said sounded far-fetched. "When she came on my Facebook about a year ago I just didn't really want a bar of it because I asked, `What are you up to nowadays?' And it's like, `I've got a kid', and you talk to her next time and it's oh, she doesn't have a kid. It's just that kind of bull...." (Source: www.stuff.co.nz)
